Performance Highlights

Congratulations to James again
James McMurray has managed to use the strength and power gained from his successful cross country season to gain the entry standard for the World and European Youth Championships this summer.
On Saturday he travelled up to Sportscity in Mancester to take part in one of the  BMC Grand Prix events. Even though the evening was not perfect with some blustery wind and cold tempertures he managed to take 2 seconds off his previous best over 1500m to go top of the rankings with a time of 3.51.69 and well inside the entry standard of 3.53.
Well done James

English Schools Cross Country Championships

As we approach the end of another cross country season St Albans Athletic club can celebrate the ultimate end of season reward. James McMurray has been selected to fly out on Friday to take part in the Home Countries international Cross Country Championship in County Antrim in Ireland wearing the English red rose on his vest.

Selection was dependent on his performance at the English Schools Cross Country Championships in Nottingham on Saturday where top youngsters converge for the conclusion of the individual schools cross country calendar. More than 2000 young athletes from 45 counties compete in the beautiful setting of Wollaton Park all proudly wearing their county colours which they have all worked hard to earn.

Proceedings were commenced with the intermediate girls’ race run over 4.1km over reasonably flat grassland. St Albans AC were represented by Megan Steer who despite running the whole race with one shoe after another athlete had accidently stepped on the back at the start , courageously continued to  finish the race strongly. The following race was the junior boys with young Jack Gentle taking on boys a year older than him. He finished a very healthy 43rd out of 331 competitors and is now determined to aim for the top next year in this schools event. Abbie West and Rebecca Pritchard both from Sir John Lawes   represented Hertfordshire in the junior and senior  girls’ races respectively and finished well up in the top half.

It was the fourth race that we all eagerly waited for as James one of the founder members of our middle distance squad was the favourite for not only a win but also England selection. As we all lined the course and watched him control the race the excitement we all shared was indicative of the whole club ethos and thanks must go to all the support network especially coaches who give their time voluntarily and indeed all the athletes that form such an excellent group of young people.

This weekends race was in glorious sunshine and a far cry from the rain and mud a few weeks previously when we all travelled up to Alton Towers for the National Cross Country Championships. St Albans fielded several teams in various age groups and to compete in arguably one of the hardest courses in recent history was definitely something all the squad should feel proud of.

The televised inter-county championships in Birmingham  was also this month and it was a great experience to see so many of the young athletes from St Albans on the television and also fantastic to see  James McMurray take fifth place a year young in the under 17 and Jack Gentle 6th place in the under 13.

So with two more races left in the calendar next weekend, James McMurray in Ireland and our STAGS junior girls team at the English schools Cup final in Alnwick we wish you all good luck and look forward to the track and field season starting in April. Hopefully all that hard cross country running will lead to some good pb’s!!

Harpenden athlete gets Olympic masterclass with Dame Kelly Holmes 11:59am Tuesday 18th May 2010

  • Harpenden's James McMurray enjoyed a dream athletics masterclass with double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes as part of his preparations for this year's Aviva English Schools Track and Field Championships.

McMurray, 15, was among 54 rising athletics stars invited to attend a day of mentoring, education and specialised training with Dame Kelly having been selected following his bronze-medal winning effort in the 1500m at last year's English Schools.

Sir John Lawes School pupil McMurray admitted the once in a lifetime opportunity at Loughborough College had increased his determination to one day follow in Dame Kelly's shoes and win Olympic gold.

"It was a really fun day – the circuit training was really tough but I think I learnt a lot about what I should be doing," said McMurray – who was joined by his coach Deborah Steer and parents Ian and Kathy in Loughborough.

McMurray added: "Dame Kelly talked a lot about being motivated and her speech at the start of the day was really inspirational – I am hoping to get a lot out of the experience.

"My ultimate aim is to compete at the Olympics – it will probably be the 2016 Games that I will aim for and hopefully I can go to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 before that."

The day was an extension of Aviva's support of the Home Countries Schools Championships, with McMurray also enjoying specialist educational workshops on fitness and lifestyle.

Dame Kelly, who was joined in helping McMurray by 'On Camp with Kelly' stars Nikki Maddick and Stevie Stockton, believes the St Albans AC ace will reap the rewards of the unique experience as his blossoming athletics career continues.

"James definitely has a bright future in athletics and hopefully the mentoring day will help him," said Dame Kelly, who won gold in both the 800m and 1500m at the Athens Olympics in 2004.

"The London Olympics are only two years away now and that should really inspire all young athletes in Great Britain. 2012 will probably come a bit too soon for James but there is 2016 and beyond to think about.

"I had to wait until I was 34 until I won in Athens so these athletes have a long career ahead of them. I want to make sure they have the best start."

The Aviva Home Countries Schools Championships form part of the Aviva UKA Academy, giving every child in the UK the chance to get involved in athletics by 2012. For more information log on to www.aviva.co.uk/athletics
